I selected my current email address and it gave me the option to delete it. Once i deleted my email address, it automatically reverted to my mobile number!!

If not, try again but also sign out of icloud completely, and while in this state (no icloud, imessage, facetime) send a text to anyone. My email address was highlighted but it also allowed me to add an email. That should force the iphone to send. I have no other option than to delete and set up my ipad as new, which did take some time. Reset your iphone, then log back into imessage/ facetime and see if that helps.
